dc.description.abstractSri Lanka is filled with various destinations which are visited by different kind of visitors every day. Due to the end of the war and the tourism promotion now it is recorded an increase in tourist arrivals to these destinations. Ensuring the safety of tourists while they are in the destinations is an important factor to retain the tourist arrivals to the country. Due to many reasons today ensuring the safety of tourist has become an issue in the tourist industry. Every day we can hear news of tourists being robbed, murdered or sexually harassed while they are on vacation. The aim of this research is to find out what are the factors caused to occur these problems in coastal areas, identify the effectiveness of the actions taken by the authorities to avoid them and the community perception towards tourism and tourists. To conduct the research I have chosen Mount - Lavinia beach area which is very famous among tourists. Analyzing the incidents taken place over the time we can identify that majority of these crimes and harassments have being occurred in coastal belt of Sri Lanka where tourists drawn in an increasing number in every year.en_US
