dc.description.abstractPoverty in Sri Lanka appears multidimensional. From the sectors in which poverty exists, the estate sector records the highest due to various factors. The objectives of the study were to find out the determinants of poverty in the estate sector and provide recommendations to reduce the poverty level. Kothmale DS Division in the Nuwara Eliya District was chosen as the area of the study. Primary and secondary data was collected for the study while using Descriptive and Logistic Regression. The data was analyzed using STATA software package. The result show that the main determinants of poverty are poor education level, Dependency level is high, lower family income, large number of household size, Improper Infrastructure, alcoholism and unpaid debts. According to the results obtained by the logistic regression model's estimated coefficient the variables influence poverty are monthly family income, household size, and education level. These variables are highly significant about research model. Considering the above factors, the following recommendations are given to reduce the poverty level and to develop the social and economic standard of the estate people. Some of the recommendations are to improve the quality of education, to increase opportunities for self employment, to abolish alcoholism, to improve the infrastructure facilities and to include all the above factors provision of deeds, proper utilization of the funds allocated in to the estate sectors, more developmental projects for the estate sector by the government.en_US
