Item Challenges and Opportunities for Community Based Tourism Development in Sembuwaththa(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019) Godage, T.G.I.M.; Wachissara, P.; Damunupola, A.K.A.Today tourism industry is a rapidly growing industry in the world as well as in Sri Lanka. Hence, the demand of travelling for experiencing the community based tourism related activities within the world is gradually increasing. The concept of community based tourism is a type of tourism that takes socio, economic and environmental sustainability in to account. In this context, this study specially focuses on identifying the key challenges and opportunities for CBT development in Sembuwaththa tourist destination which is located in Matale, Sri Lanka. Further study also attempts to find out the attitudes and perception of local communities on tourism development in Sembuwaththa tourist destination. In order to achieve these objectives, data were generated through qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative (survey questionnaires) approaches. The researcher has collected data from 10 local community people who are living in Sembuwaththa area and 100 tourists who visited this area according to the convenience sampling method. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis with the support of SPSS 21.0 version while qualitative data were used to validate the study. In this research several challenges have been identified for CBT development in the study area. Such as lack of knowledge and interest of local community towards CBT, language barriers of local community and lack of infrastructure facilities were identified as challenges. However, number of opportunities like the strategic location site, tourists has high satisfaction level and revisit intention towards the destination after they visited the site, high demand for recreational activities and positive attitude of the CBT participants towards CBT were identified as opportunities for CBT development in the area. This article proposes strategies to develop the tourism industry in the destination with the community participation in sustainable manner.Item Entrepreneurial Intention of Prisoners in Sri Lanka(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019-02) Isharika, D.H.V.; Sutha, J.; Fasana, S.F.; Wachissara, P.Development of entrepreneurship concept is directly involved with entrepreneurial behavior and thus it has become an important topic to study. Prisoners are a kind of inactive and untouched category in the society that could be used to contribute the development any country. Prisoner’s unemployment is one of the major factors that caused a higher rate of recidivism. Given the lack of empirical and the divergent finding of intention of entrepreneurship, this study investigated the nature of entrepreneurial intention of prisoners in Sri Lanka. Convenience sampling method and stratified sampling method were employed to select 150 prisoners from the prison institution of Sri Lanka. Data were gathered by using self-administered questionnaires and interviews. Hence, Correlation, Multiple Regression, and Thematic Analysis were used to analyze data. The results revealed that the existing level of attitudes towards the behavior and entrepreneurial intention were almost agreed by the prisoners while they moderately agreed with the existing level of subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. Alongside, it was found that attitudes towards the behavior and perceived behavioral control strong positively influence the entrepreneurial intention while subjective norms weak positively influence the entrepreneurial intention. The study contributes to the existing knowledge and suggests that the government should pay more attention to enhance the entrepreneurial intention among the prisoners. Further, study also provided areas for future researches.Item Impact of Counselling On Employee Retention at Exit Interviews (With Special Reference to the Apparel Industry in Sri Lanka)(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019) Rashmika, G.G.; Sutha, J.; Wachissara, P.Studying counselling on employee retention among employees has become an important topic. The study examines the impact of counselling during the exit interview on employee retention. In a leading apparel company’s labour turnover among employees, especially machine operators, which showed that employee turnover is one of the major problems. This study aims to address the objectives of the study were to identify the counselling practices in Apparel Industries, to identify the relationship of counselling in employee retention in exit interview. In order to achieve those, this study was designed qualitative approach. A sample of 30 employees who have already decided to resign was selected utilizing convenience sampling method representing apparel industries. The qualitative data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews. The interview transcripts were analysed to identify the patterns using thematic analysis techniques. This study used counselling techniques which include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. Cognitive behavioural therapy was applied for fifteen machine operates at the exist interview and thirteen employees were retained. However, after the counselling sessions, two employees were left the institution. This study proposes to apply Rational Emotional Behavioural Therapy, and modifying dysfunctional thinking and behaviour as Cognitive Behavioural therapy techniques during the exit interview or any appropriate time before the employee leaving in order to retain employees. This study recommended practicing employee counselling by using therapies during the exit interview. Further, which may result in retaining employees. Results of this study add rich qualitative data to the counselling literature as well as to the other social and managerial implicationsItem The Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Quality of Work Life on Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (With Special Reference to Banking Employees)(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2021) Dissanayake, D.F.; Wachissara, P.; De Silva, P.O.Organizational citizenship behaviour as an emerging concept concentrate on organizational effectiveness and success has been gained intense attention from scholars since the last decade Organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) plays a crucial role in the service sector, and profoundly in the banking sector. The quality of work-life and emotional intelligence as the cannons of OCB act as the most influential factors in organizational effectiveness. However, the extant literature in this context is fragmented and limited. Therefore, the study overlooks the impact of emotional intelligence and quality of work-life on organizational citizenship behaviour. Accordingly, the study evaluated the perceptions of 150 employees who worked in state banks Sri Lanak by employing a quantitative research design. A self-administered 5 point Lickert scale questionnaire designed to measure emotional intelligence, quality of work-life and organizational citizenship behaviour.was distributed among the study sample following the convenience sampling technique. The gathered data were analysed incorporating Partial Least Square – structural equation modelling through PLS path modelling and SPSS. The findings ascertained a significant relationship between the quality of work- life, emotional intelligence and organizational citizenship behaviour. Moreover, quality of work-life determined as the most influential variable in establishing OCB. Thus, the study recommends a regulatory and policy framework to encapsulate these elements into Organizational Citizenship Behaviour. A senior person serves as a mentor, and a person with less experience serves as a mentee. It involves transformation of individuals’ mental status. Career success can be achieved through career motivational climate, which refers to the stimulating nature of work place to achieve individuals’ career success. Current researcher identifies a gap in the literature about the impact of mentoring on extrinsic and intrinsic career success through the moderating effect of career motivation climate. Hence, the researcher’s attempt is to identify the moderating effect of career motivation climate on enhancing the strength of the relationship between mentoring and career success. Managerial level employees of Sri Lankan finance institutions are identified as the sample of the study. The sample size is 100 employees and a self-administered questionnaire was fielded to collect primary data by using convenient sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient analysis, simple regression and multiple regression analysis of SPSS software. The results of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between mentoring and extrinsic and intrinsic career success and there is a moderating effect of career motivation climate on the relationship between mentoring and intrinsic career success. The findings of the study support to the human resource managers of finance institutions to identify career success, mentoring aspects to achieve career success and the actions to be taken for the development of career motivation climate of the institutions.Item Impact of Perceived Organizational Support on Employee Turnover Intention: The Role of Psychological Contract Violation as a Mediator with Special Reference to the Operational Level Employees in Sigiriya Area Hotels(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2020) Premarathne, B.G.R.L.S.; Fasana, S. F.; Wachissara, P.; Jayasinghe, N. C.The tourism industry in Sri Lanka has developed to a greater extent after the civil war. Since employee turnover is one of the significant matters related to this industry, scholars tend to be aware of psychological factors in predicting this turnover intention and actual turnover. Perceived organizational support and psychological contract are two important psychological factors that affect employees’ perception and behavior. There is a significant lack of empirical studies which has focused on psychological factors and turnover intention relevant to the tourism industry in Sri Lanka. The objective of this study was to identify the mediation effect of the psychological contract violation between perceived organizational support and employee turnover intention. The study is quantitative and it was conducted by taking 982 employees from hotels in the Sigiriya area. 276 of them were selected by using the stratified sampling technique. Primary data were collected by using a self-administrated questionnaire and Partial Least SquareStructural Equation Modeling was performed. Descriptive statistics were used to identify the level of perceived organizational support, psychological contract violation, and employee turnover intention. As per the path modeling results, the psychological contract violation was created a significant partial mediating effect between the perceived organizational support and employee turnover intention. Further, the perceived organizational support directly impacted on the employee turnover intention. The study suggests, psychological contract violation as a key consideration between perceived organizational support and employee turnover intention and provides recommendations and practical implications for hotel management. In ongoing years, it has, however, been reprimanded by rural developers due to their lack of concern for the rural poor and for being too increasingly focused on tourism specifically. The main purpose of this study was to identify the impacts of tourism development on the livelihood of rural residents in the Haputhale area and specifically to identify the existing level of rural livelihood, the relationship between tourism development and rural livelihood, and identifying the impacts of tourism development on rural livelihood in Haputhale area. A structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale was used as a research instrument to gather information from 150 respondents. Further, in the analysis, the reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used. The existing level of rural livelihood was analysed using descriptive statistics. According to the correlation analysis, there was a strong positive relationship between tourism development and rural livelihood in the Haputhale area. Based on the research findings it is recommended that in order to develop tourism in Haputhale rural areas it should consider economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts considering the livelihood patterns in the rural area. Northern Sri Lanka was severely affected by thirty years of etnic war and has immensely invested its resources for diverse tourism components moving forward as a most sought travel destination while reaping many benefits. However, this transition has put the community under much pressure and their day-to-day life was significantly affected. Conforming the capacity of tourism development to change resident‟s traditions and way of living. As the northern community was notably going through very sensitive vibrations over years, the impact of fast growing tourism waves on their human life should be carefully managed in order to avoid long term social issues in the area. This study extended to identify the potentials and tourism development in Jaffna. A sample of fourteen local residents was drawn using purposive sampling. Primary data were collected by using structured interviews. Based on the information given, the researcher has developed the research. The researcher has used the thematic analysis method to analyze the data using Microsoft Excel 2010 software. Finally based on the findings of the study, the researcher draw five main conclusions: (1)Peace is play vital role on the development of the Jaffna‟s tourism industry after the civil war.(2)Culture of the Jaffna, poor tourism planning, lack of the community engagement are seen as a major challenges to the development of the tourism in Jaffna. (3) Jaffna residents have stronger cultural perception and they strongly demanded cultural protection. (4)Tourism related infrastructure development in Jaffna is very low when compared with other districts. (5)Land of Jaffna is more polluted by the local tourists than the foreign tourists through the tourism activities. Based on the findings of the research some recommendations have been made that could help to formulate appropriate policy and strategy. Keywords: Postwar destination; potentials; Resident‟s perception; Tourism development; Impact of tourismItem A Study on Career Aspirations of Undergraduates in Sri Lanka(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Madurangi, A.W.G.; Sutha, J.; Wachissara, P.Studying career aspiration among undergraduates has become an important topic since undergraduates face numerous challenges after completing their university degree especially when seeking for suitable employment opportunities. Therefore, this study mainly investigates the "career aspiration" in the context of current Sri Lankan Undergraduates, identify the factors that affect different career aspirations of undergraduates and the key issues faced by undergraduates with regard to their career aspirations by applying the theory of planned behaviour. In order to achieve the research objectives, the study was devised using descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected from 20 undergraduates in 04 solitary universities as per the sample and from 03 graduates to conduct case studies based on their successful stories for validation purpose through semi structured interviews. The analysis is done by thematic analysis method by using NVivo 8 qualitative analysis software. Based on the findings of the study the concept career aspiration defined as "identification of an appropriate professional path during the period of undergraduate with realistic vision by considering future career targets, goals and objectives through which the final satisfaction could be achieved", and indicated that the subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and attitude are the factors which affect different career aspirations of the undergraduates in Sri Lanka. Finally, key issues were identified as lack of experiences, competition, political changes and lack of monetary facilities and all the respondents agree with the statement that the identified issues become great influence to career aspiration. This research is a significant source for the policy makers and decision makers in manipulating the university education system of the island and the universities can meaningfully contribute towards career development of undergraduates.
