SATISFACTION OF LOW-COUNTRY VEGETABLE FARMERS ABOUT THE AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE OF SRI LANKA

dc.description.abstractIn Sri Lanka public sector organizations are the major party of extension delivery. Lack of grass root level extension personnel is one of the major problems. Due to this problem, there is no proper link between research and farmers. Policy makers and planners never practiced farmer first approaches. Continuous failure of projects reduces farmer respect and trustworthiness of these projects. This study was completed to find the perception of low- country vegetable farmers on agriculture extension service in Sri Lanka. Objectives of the study were determined satisfaction of farmers, investigate factors which are affected to the satisfaction of farmers and find out extension needs of low- country vegetable farmers. This study was conducted in Anuradhapura and Monaragala districts where high production of low- country vegetables is taken place throughout the year. Sample size was 200 farmers. Data were gathered using semi structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to state the objectives. Approximately 66.5% of total sample was dissatisfied about the agricultural extension service. Nearly 33.5% of farmers were satisfied about the agricultural extension service. Most of farmers were needed information regarding pest and disease problems. It was 59% of total sample. Results shows that extension source, timely information delivery, perceived qualification of extension agent, trustworthiness of extension agent and continuity of service (p<0.05)were significantly related to the satisfaction of farmers.en_US
