DETERMINANTS OF MIGRATION AND REMITTANCES: EVIDENCE FROM RURAL SECTOR IN SRI LANKA

Abstract
Employing a nationally representation data set, this study attempts to find the determinants of migration and remittances in rural sector of Sri Lanka.Considering the human capital characteristics, Network variables, Wealth and distance variables determinants were found using probit and multinomial logit models. The result of probit model suggests that contribution for migration is significantly determined by Age of household head, Educational level of household head, Gender of household head, Number of males and females over 15,Household Size, Number of Workers over age 15, Number of Old Dependents, Number of Young Dependents, Number of members over age 15 with above A/L education, Number of members over age 15 with 12 years, Number of members over age 15 with 0/L, Number of members over age 15 with 6-10 years of education, Number of members over age 15 with 1-5 years of education, Number of members over age 15 with no education and contribution for remittances is significantly determined by Gender of household head, Number of Workers over age 15, Number of members over age 15 with above A/L education. Result of multinomial logit model suggests that Internal remittances is significantly determined by Gender of household head, Number of members over age 15,Number of workers over age 15,Number of Young Dependents, Number of members overage 15 with above A/L education, Number of members overage 15 with A/L education and Number of Sinhala household head and contribution for International remittances is significantly determined by Number of workers over age 15,Number of members overage 15 with above A/L education, Number of Sinhala household head and Number of Indian Tamil household head.
