Item Service Quality Perception in the Hotel Industry; with Special Reference to Galle District(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2010) Sheriff, A.M.; Ranasingha, J.P.R.C.The service quality is an important factor for the success in the hotel industry. This research attempts to study customer's perceived service quality in the hotel industry in the context of Sri Lanka. This paper aims to elucidate what customers think of the quality of service by evaluating nine service quality dimensions of the service quality. The method employed to gather the research data was adopted from some of the instruments used in the SERVQUAL method as well as some of the other popular dimensions used in the hotel industry researches regarding measuring the perceived service quality. The descriptive statistics and analysis was employed to analyse and present scales of 5 point Likert questionnaires. The research findings indicated that generally the customers in the classified hotels were satisfied with the service quality that was provided by the hotel management. The study recommends concentrating on the service quality dimensions which are in the lower perceived levels. Based on it the relevant authorities are recommended to take initiative steps to further increase the perceived service quality in this sector as it will help the tourism industry in Sri Lanka to prosper and create a competitive position against the rival countries. The highlighted areas of infrastructure and quality human resources are recommended to concentrate in positioning Sri Lanka as a competitive destination in future. This study focuses on ecotourism practices in Nuwara Eliya District and elicits its impact on tourist attractiveness to the area. The central focus of this study is to test the impact of ecotourism initiatives on customer attractiveness. To facilitate this, both primary & secondary data was used while survey method was employed to collect primary data. Descriptive statistics method was used to analyze data. The study elucidated nature trials, tea tourism & bird watching to be attractive eco-activities in the area. Usage of eco-friendly products, organic farming can be seen among the ecotourism practitioners. Hotels were able to build environmental awareness through sponsorships & promotions, creates employment opportunities & financial benefits to local community through ecotourism practices. The facility operators emphasized slower, positive growth rates related to ecotourism market under the area of study. It was also evident that eco-activities have not directly influenced to increase hotels' profits, & tourists' arrivals to the area. Lacking infrastructure & safety & quality ecotourism product availability limit the growth of ecotourism practices within the Nuwara Eliya district. Finally the study recommends addressing urgently the above issues to promote Nuwara Eliya as an attractive ecotourism destination. It focuses to emphasis naturally and culturally rich resources of country's potentiality to go beyond mass tourism and cater on niche tourism concept such as ecotourism. Study sample include both tourists and hotels within Nuwara Eliya district special focus given for ecotourism practitioners. Use survey research method while use of both primary and secondary data sources, to draw conclusions about ecotourism practitioners and customer attractiveness through direct value creation function of profits and volumes. Highly practicing eco activities within the Nuwara Eliya district are Nature trials, tea tourism, bird watching, cycling and mountain biking. Usage of eco-friendly products, organic farming, and recycling and energy conservation can be seen among the ecotourism practitioners. Hotels were able to build environmental awareness through sponsorships and promotions.
