Item Analysis of the Effect of the Working Environment to the Job Satisfaction of the Air Hostesses (with special reference to Sri Lankan Airlines)(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Wijerathna, W.G.N.S.C.D.; Herath, H.M.W.M.The research was done to analyze the job satisfaction of Air hostesses in respect to their working environmental factors and with a special reference to Sri Lankan Airlines. Airhostesses make the first impression of the country. They need to serve food and beverages to the passengers while taking care of the safety and security of all on board. Even if lots of benefits come with air hostess positions, there are difficulties to do the job too. Mostly the working environment factors are affecting the job dissatisfaction. Young ladies are selected to work on the air with strange people, work being far away from beloved ones, tough roster, long hours, odd working times, sleepless nights, routine work and etc. Objectives of the research are, identifying the effect and the major critical factors of working environment that effect to the job satisfaction of the Air Hostesses. Population was all currently working Sri Lankan Airlines airhostesses and a sample was 50 of them. The simple random sampling method was used and with questionnaires and Google forms the data was collected. In the analysis Air hostesses' job satisfaction was the dependent variable and their working environment was the dependent variable including three factors such as Job It Self, Job Environment and Organizational Characteristics. For the analysis, Descriptive statistics was used the Demographic factor analysis and correlation and Regression were used for relationship analysis. With the 0.813 overall Pearson correlation, it proved that there is a strong positive correlation in between independent and dependent variables at the significant level 0.01. Coefficient table of the regression analysis of this study showed all the independent variables had been negatively reacted upon the dependent variable with an unstandardized beta coefficient for the constant -0.059. The major affecting factor for the job satisfaction is the job environment with 0.658 unstandardized coefficient beta value. As the suggestions flexible time schedules for flying, fare duty rosters, provide comfortable garments and the accessories, minimize the injurious and the heavy equipments from ladies and having altered solutions for them, and minimize the monotonous working pattern can be given.Item Analysis of Tourism Destination Competitiveness in Nuwara Eliya Region (Supplier’s Perspective)(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019) Karunarathna, H.D.C.M.; Herath, H.M.W.M.; Damunupola, A.K.A.Destination is places where tourism has developed extemporary or has been actively encouraged. A competitive advantage can be achieved if the universal appeal of the destination is valuable to that of optional destination to potential visitors. Destination to become competitive they must strategically promote specific features distinguishing them from similar destinations or establish competitive advantages. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) statistical report 2016, the tourist occupancy rate in high country has been gradually increased. Further Nuwara Eliya and Rathnapura are major tourism destination in high country. Therefore this study selected Nuwara Eliya as a tourism destination. This study mainly focuses on to identify the existing destination attractive determinants, relationship between destination attractive determinants & destination competitiveness and also most significant destination attractive determinant on overall destination competitiveness in Nuwara Eliya region, The study uses model to investigate the destination competitiveness, addressing the following destination attractive determinants : inherited resources, created resources, supporting factors, destination management, and situational conditions. This study is useful to tourism stakeholders and it serve as a guide for other destinations seeking to understand their competitiveness. Research is mostly based on Primary data and researcher used convenience sampling method used to collect data from the 50 tourism industry stakeholders who are in the Nuwara Eliya region. Data were analysed by using SPSS. The results revealed that destination management and situational condition are existing destination attractive determinants , There is a positive relationship between destination attractive determinants and destination competitiveness and also created resources are the most significant destination attractive determinate out of the five determinants.Item A Case Study of the Critical Thinking Skills Among the University Students in Sri Lanka(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019) Herath, H.M.W.M.Critical thinking skills are considered one of the most sought-after skills in almost every field such as education, finance, legal profession, research, and management etc. Developing the ability to think independently and rationally about what to do or what to believe in certain situations and formulate ones’ own opinions and draw his or her own conclusions have been widely accepted as obviously important. In Sri Lankan context, there is an attitude among many people that the university undergraduates are not very good in critical thinking. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine the critical thinking skills among the undergraduate students in Uva Wellassa Univerity, Sri Lanka. The population was taken as all university 100 level students who are attached to the Faculty of Management, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture and Faculty of Technological Studies in 2018. The sample of 60 students was selected as 25 male and 35 female. The form of the California Critical thinking Skills questionnaire and an interview method were used to collect the data from the sample. The data were descriptively analyzed using SPSS 16. The results indicate that the respondents are quite confident in their critical thinking ability but according to the findings, there is a mild score of critical thinking skills in general. The score of Critical thinking skills in female students was higher than male students but that is not significant. Based on the findings it was suggested to increase students’ ability in critical thinking, special training courses, programs, and workshops etc. are needed to be introduced and included in the university curriculum.Item Correlation between Sri Lankan University Students' Self —Esteem and their English Speaking Skills(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Herath, H.M.W.M.; Jayasundara, J.M.P.V.K.Attitudes of individuals on themselves and self-evaluation have continuously been subjected to many researches in social psychology. This research was conducted to discover the relationship between self — esteem and English speaking skills of undergraduates in Sri Lankan universities. To conduct the study, both male and female undergraduates in two state universities; Uva Wellassa University and University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka were selected. The sample of 100 first year undergraduates (42 male and 58 female) from Faculty of Management were taken as the sample. To measure the self — esteem of the undergraduates, Rosenberg selfesteem scale was used. All items in the questionnaire were answered using a 4-point Likert scale format ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. An oral proficiency test (OPT) was administrated to determine the level of students' speaking ability. The levels of skills were tested in term of accent, structure, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. In addition to those, their nonverbal skills were also taken in to the consideration. To analyze the data Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (SPSS 11) was used. T-test was used to find whether there is a statistically significant relationship between the spoken performances of the students and their self-esteem. The study also revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between English language speaking skills and self-esteem of undergraduates in tertiary level education. The results showed that students with lower level of English speaking skills have lower level of self-esteem and students with high level of English speaking skills have high self-esteem. The students who suffer from lowered self-esteem as they examine themselves; they tend to focus their attention on negative thoughts, which thereby increases self-dissatisfaction.Item Impact of Organizational Culture on Career Development of Women Employees in Hotel Industry: Special Reference to Northern Province(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2020) Sowmiya, A.; Herath, H.M.W.M.; Damunupola, A.K.A.The aim of this study was to identify the impact of organizational culture on career development of women employees in hotel industry. Based on a comprehensive literature review, the authors adopted five dimensions of Hofstede’s organizational culture namely, power distance, collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation and their influence to study how organizational culture could influence the career development of women employees in hotel industry. The study mainly considered the primary data. The primary data were collected through a structure questionnaire with 140 respondents from selected hotels in Northern province. Univariate and bivariate techniques were used in the data analysis. The results showed that organizational culture highly impacted on the career development of women employees. Furthermore, the dimensions of collectivism showed a high positive and significant impact on career development of women employees. The findings of this study have various managerial implications for hotels and other industries. Keywords: Power distance, Uncertainty avoidance, Masculinity /Femininity, Long term orientation & career developmentItem Impact of Pursuing Certificate in English for Junior Executives on Enhancement of Communication through English Language(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Jayasundara, J.M.P.V.K.; Herath, H.M.W.M.Having gained international acceptance as widely used medium of communication, English reigns supreme in all aspects of the society. This research intends discovering the prime objective, the impact of pursuing 'Certificate in English for Junior Executives (CEJE}' on enhancement of communication skill through English and the research problem was formulated as, is there a significant impact of pursuing CEJE on enhancing communication through English? Randomly selected sample of 80 Junior Executives in different public and private institutions in Uva Province was considered while employing questionnaire and observations to collect primary data. The statistical software, Minitab 15 was used for analytical purpose. In addition, graphs and charts were used for graphical representation of the results. As to the results ascertained, the respondents have gained better improvement in all language skills than the previous stage after pursuing CEJE recording significant boost in 'very good' and ‘good’ levels of communication through English while reflecting negative effect on ‘fair’, ‘poor’ and 'very poor' levels in particular aspect. Hence, the research highlighted the positive impact of pursuing CEJE on enhancement of communication through English language among adult learners. Further, the findings illustrated the importance of applying interactive activities in language classrooms to better facilitate learners as majority of the learners have the belief that they could be competent communicators in English while enhancing their language skills through array of interesting activities. Consequently, the current research intends to challenge the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH). Thus, outcome of this research is beneficial for designing training programs for employees enlightening the teaching and learning process of English as a Second Language in Sri Lanka especially with the implementation of creative teaching methodologies including diversified yet interesting activities and further research can be conducted pursuing this line of the research..Item The Impact of Television Food Advertisements on Children, with Special Reference to the Plantation Community in Badulla District(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Herath, H.M.W.M.Many studies have been conducted on the impact of advertisements on children, and it has been accepted that the television advertisements make the biggest impact on children. Children spend many hours watching television and they are bombarded with advertisements daily. Hence, the parents should conscious about the messages the advertisements bring to their children. This study aims at investigating the impact of advertisements on children in the plantation community in Badulla district. Using the convenient sample method, 50 children (20 males and 30 females) in age between 4 to 6 years were selected for the survey. The survey was conducted in an estate located in Passara area in the Badulla district, where socioeconomic and health indicators were very low compared to other districts of the island. A self-constructed questionnaire was used to collect data and interviews were held with the children and their parents in order to collect personal qualitative data. Close observation was also used as a qualitative data collection method. To analyze data, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 17 was used. It was found that the food advertisements have a statistically significant impact on children's behavior. Further, it revealed that when children watch more television they are likely to request unhealthier junk foods than the proper healthy meals. Further, it found that the uneducated parents are inclined to buy the food demanded by the children rather than giving them healthy and balanced meals. The majority of the children showed that their attitude of food advertisements were very positive and that they rely on the information given by the advertisements.Item Likeable Attributes Of Beauty Product TV Advertisements Impact on Female Consumer Purchase Intention (With Special Reference to Kandy Area)(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2018) Parakramage, K.P.N.S.; Herath, H.M.W.M.Likeable attributes are one of the most impacting factors in the TV advertisements. Because it encouraging customers to watch and remember particular advertisements. Also it impact on consumers' purchase intention. In beauty product TV advertisements there mostly can see this kind of attributes. It also enhances the ability to increase brand salience. For this to occur, respondents have to correctly associate the right brand with the particular beauty product TV advertisements. Yet there are reasons to assume that making an advertisement likeable might make it more difficult to effectively brand. The modeling was conducted on data from an advertising tracking monitor in beauty product TV advertisements. Data was collected on approximately 10 individual television ads (mainly considered 04 brands which are common in TV advertisements) from over 150 female respondents in Kandy area. Statistical tool SPSS used to analyze the gathered data. A very clear association, at the aggregate level, between likeable attributes and female consumer purchase intention is demonstrated showing that ads that are more likeable tend to have higher rates of correct purchase decisions. This paper revealed that some of likeable attributes in beauty product TV advertisements (general tactics, and strategy) have strong relationship with female consumer purchase intention. Further there is an average correlation with media specific tactics of the beauty product TV advertisements.Item Potentiality of Fashion Industry for the Tourism Development in Sri Lanka(Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, 2019) Sirisena, B.D.W.; Herath, H.M.W.M.; Damunupola, A.K.A.Today many tourists from all over the world specifically visit fashion cities to explore fashion related elements such as participate in major fashion weeks, fashion forums and exhibitions, consume branded and unique fashion products and so on. These fashion elements can be seen in this tropical country Sri Lanka along with the unique and extraordinary manufacturing techniques. Sri Lanka is globally recognized as the tourism destination with unprecedented natural beauty, beaches, wild life, culture and art and crafts. The art and craft play a major role in promoting Sri Lankan beauty to the world; it represents our culture, natural beauty, wild life and traditions. Fortunately, this remarkable craftsmanship was adopted by Sri Lankan fashion industry many years ago that led to create great masterpieces inspired with Batik, handloom, lace and so on. Colombo is the major hub for fashion since it’s consisted with major fashion design institutes, national and international fashion weeks, origin of talented fashion designers and major fashion boutiques. The focus of the study was to examine the linkage between fashion and tourism in the city of Colombo and its tourism potentials. The research analysed existing situation of fashion industry and the potential of fashion industry to promote Colombo as a fashion city. This study unveiled the challenges and opportunities involve in fashion industry to contribute for the tourism development in Sri Lanka. In order to justify the potentiality of fashion industry for the tourism development, all the evidences and data was collected from experienced and famous fashion designers, major fashion week organizers, Export Development Board and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau through semi- structured interviews and the conclusion was given after going through the thematic analysis. The conclusion of the study emphasized the fact that there is a huge potentiality for the fashion industry to make a vital contribution to tourism development in Sri Lanka by promoting Colombo as a fashion city. But this depends on proper framework for the fashion industry a tourism industry, financial support by the government to all the stakeholders of fashion and tourism industry and effective marketing and promotional efforts that are consistent.
